Maize Meal in Zambia: The Giffen Good Paradox
Mealie meal in Zambia (Corn meal) is not a normal good in the economic sense, it is a Giffen good. This paper sets out the conditions under which we would expect Giffen behaviour can be demonstrated by elaborating Marshall’s statement with respect to Mealie meal prices in Zambia. This paper by Kampamba Shula concludes that the very poorest and the least poor consumers have downward sloping demands for Mealie meal, while the group in the middle exhibits Giffen behaviour.
